    About the Role: As the Team Leader of Corporate Communications, you will develop and implement the company’s overall strategic public relations programs including media relations, community relations, internal communications, issue managements and crisis communications preparedness. This will require effective collaboration with leadership within the department, as well as with senior leadership throughout the company to ensure continuity of messaging and positive positioning of the company, its products and services. You will also prepare an annual strategic plan with actionable tactics to facilitate information and knowledge exchanges with internal and key external stakeholders. The aim of this critical corporate function is building and protecting the company’s reputation among internal and external stakeholders.

    Minimum Qualifications Required (all must be met to be considered)

    • Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations (PR), Communications, Marketing or related field, or direct and applicable work experience.
    • 7+ years of PR or related marketing communications experience, including:
      • Media relations for a large organization.
      • Crisis communications.
      • Strong writing skills and the ability to coach others in this area.
    • Ability to lead and coach a diverse team of communication professionals toward the achievement of business results.
    • Advanced verbal and written communication skills. Must articulate information accurately to internal and external stakeholders, including senior leadership, as well as represent Wellmark’s brand with professionalism. Demonstrates sound judgment, critical thinking and poise in stressful situations.
    • Advanced ability to cultivate and manage key relationships. Effective collaboration across a multi-disciplinary peer group and upward to senior leadership to manage to resolve business issues or challenges will be critical to success.
    • Proactive, thoughtful approach to project management with the ability to effectively manage and implement multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
    • Effective consultation skills and ability to influence others. Must be able to understand the needs of others and develop actionable solutions that align that balance department strategy with customer/stakeholder needs.
    • Proficiency with MS Office – e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

    Hiring Specifications Preferred

    • Bachelor’s Degree in PR, Communications, Marketing or related field.
    • 10+ years of related PR and/or marketing communication experience. Internal communications experience is a plus.
    • Formal leadership experience.
    • APR certification.

    Job Accountabilities

    a. Provide leadership and day-to-day management of financial and human resources. Provide employee coaching and ongoing development. Lead output of direct reports to ensure alignment with business strategies. Lead the development and oversee execution of communication strategies and programs in support of Wellmark business goals. Consult and collaborate with C-suite through director level executives on high priority company initiatives.

    b. Develop, monitor and ensure the successful outcome of an annual strategic plan for corporate communications accountable for development of annual budget and management of expenses.

    c. Manage internal communications programs to support internal embracing of corporate strategic framework, business objectives, corporate culture initiatives, and infuse company values and core brand essence among internal workforce and embedded contractors. This is achieved through the development and management of a number of internal communications channels, including but not limited to internal emails, the Intranet and BlueTV.

    d. Manage a community relations program designed to build company brand awareness, image and reputation among external stakeholders through sponsorships, events, and charitable contributions.

    e. Manage media relations function including deployment of proactive strategies as well as responsiveness to press inquiries monitor reputation of company through annual earned media measurement work efficiently and effectively with media contacts by responding to inquiries in a timely and transparent manner.

    f. Manage social media function, ensuring content strategy and editorial calendar are developed and implemented to align with the overall corporate communication strategy and to continually increase engagement with external stakeholders.

    g. Manage issues management and crisis communications responsibilities designed to protect and defend the companys reputation in the event of a public issue or challenge. Development of proactive plans, tools and communications messages for scenarios, advance training of senior management and communications staff, and participation in tabletop exercises are key responsibilities of the leader. Manage daytoday complex issues and press inquiries relating to the overall corporate image as well as the companys business activities. In consultation with senior management, deal proactively with crisis management issues as they arise.

    h. Serve as communications consultant to senior executives and leaders across the organization to identify and develop key messages and communication materials in support of business objectives this could include speech and presentation development, or other vehicles designed to be used by leaders to consistently communicate corporate messages internally or with external constituents. Provide corporate message and media relations training to leadership with direct contact with the press.

    i. Work proactively and collaboratively with leadership and communications leads within Corporate & Marketing Communications department to leverage B2B and B2C public relations strategies and tactics to successfully deploy integrated public relations programs that build brand image, strengthen market position, and extend awareness and understanding of corporate products and solutions.
