  • Job Summary

    Wellmark’s Director of Process Excellence will lead the development and execution of a sustainable Process Excellence strategy. Focused on transforming processes and automation across the organization, this individual will lead a team of Process Excellence Consultants with the objective of driving business impact, reducing costs, creating member experience improvements, and positively impacting productivity. This individual will consult and collaborate with key executives/leaders to identify process improvement opportunities, measure the effectiveness of existing business processes, and develop sustainable, quantifiable business process improvements.


    Because this role is a leader of others, this individual will directly impact the success, growth, and development of team members by setting clear expectations, defining accountabilities, providing regular feedback/coaching, facilitating change, and providing an overall positive work environment. Being a role model in behaviors that demonstrate our core competencies is a must.

    Minimum Qualifications Required (all must be met to be considered)

    • Bachelor’s Degree or direct and applicable work experience.
    • 10+ years of business process analysis/improvement experience including:
      • Track record of success leading complex initiatives through partnership with diverse teams, including senior leadership. Ability to identify savings, cost reductions, or efficiencies while producing results in a complex, multi-dimensional team environment.
      • Making effective decisions and setting strategy based on long-term vision; using an enterprise-wide perspective to translate strategies into team’s actions, inspiring others to embrace and advance the strategy, and creating a clear view of the future state.
      • Familiarity with business process automation initiatives.
    • 5+ years of leadership experience. Ability to effectively guide others, modeling adaptability, and inspiring strong organizational performance through periods of transformation, ambiguity, and complexity.
    • Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Ability to analyze information/data, identify trends, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.
    • Proficient Microsoft Office Suite skills – e.g., spreadsheets, presentation, process mapping, and word processing software.
    • Strong verbal and written communications skills with the ability to facilitate crucial conversations and influence stakeholders, including senior leadership.
    • Advanced consulting skills and understanding of the business as well as its interdependencies. Ability to evaluate customer and stakeholder needs when developing recommendations.
    • Willingness to challenge the status quo while maintaining relationships. Ability to quickly find common ground and solve problems. Viewed as a collaborative, trustworthy business partner.
    • Ability to travel as needed. (<5%)

    Hiring Specifications Preferred

    • Master's Degree.
    • Prior work experience in a process consulting capacity.
    • Six Sigma Black Belt.

    Job Accountabilities

    a. Provide the strategic direction and leadership for Process Excellence team that support Wellmark and divisional strategy and goals. Cascade and communicate strategy and initiatives to team members, driving customer/stakeholder service, and supporting achievement of overall company results.

    b. Provide leadership and day-to-day management of financial and human resources, primarily focusing on employee coaching, development, performance improvement, coordination and budgeting for staff and department specific functions/services. Support business objectives and produce results that are effective, accurate, timely, and on target to meet business and stakeholder needs.

    c. Through trusted business relationships, will partner with the Senior Leadership Team, Officers, and other key external stakeholders across Wellmark to develop a sustainable Process Excellence strategy. Ensure the alignment and execution of an integrated/transformational strategy for the organization. Proactively identify and eliminate waste and defects within existing processes, yield positive financial impacts from process improvements, and drive greater process effectiveness and efficiency throughout Wellmark.

    d. Drive continuous improvement culture through training, co-ordination and implementation of Lean/Six-Sigma principles in day-today operations. Will oversee the planning, assignment and execution of process improvement projects, analyzing business needs and priorities, monitoring workflow and prioritization of work, and ensuring resources are effectively and efficiently deployed. Lead transformational enterprise-level projects as needed.

    e. Enhance and sustain a process-oriented culture where customer and business requirements and process controls are documented, communicated, and utilized to improve work processes. Assist in the establishment of qualitative measures to validate overall efficiency and effectiveness of quality outputs.

    f. Provide expertise in recommending, influencing and facilitating organizational, business and process change throughout the enterprise, including at the senior leadership team level, by applying appropriate change management tools and techniques.

    g. Build relationships and demonstrate effective interpersonal behaviors across the organization, develop an understanding of how departments function, and provide valuable consultation to business leaders, officers and senior leadership in order to help deliver break-through solutions and spur transformational change toward meeting the strategic objectives of the company.

    h. Lead in the identification and incorporation of industry best practices, benchmarks and voice of the customer/stakeholder data in support of the process improvement strategy execution.
