Job Summary

Wellmark is currently recruiting for an Actuarial Assistant to join our team!  In this role you will perform independent analysis and reporting and summarize findings of health care and insurance industry developments and actuarial data.  This is a technical actuarial position. You will consult on various issues related to rating of specific groups or benefits.

Minimum Qualifications Required (all must be met to be considered)

Bachelor’s Degree in related field or direct applicable work experience

  • Previous experience in a finance related role or completed coursework in finance
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline driven, fast paced environment
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships of trust
  • Ability to observe, monitor, and analyze data
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem solve to identify solutions
  • Ability to use mathematical techniques to calculate data or solve practical problems
  • Attention to detail with the ability to multitask

Hiring Specifications Preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Passed one (1) of the core exams as administered/recognized by the Society of Actuaries (ex. P, FM, MLC, MFE, C)
  • Prior experience in an Actuarial role
  • Previous experience in the health insurance industry


Job Accountabilities

a. Provide analysis and recommendations in order for assigned market segments to achieve corporate profitability objectives through specifically assigned analysis projects. Provide information regarding rates, trends, rating factors and formulas. Consults on various issues related to rating of specific groups or benefits, with direction.

b. Ensure the Chief Actuary is apprised of current and future health care and insurance industry developments that contribute to decision making by completing assigned analyses and summarizing conclusions, with direction.

c. Provide comprehensive and timely data analysis of health care trends and financial measures with summary conclusions, as assigned. Provide financial statements as needed for financial reporting reserves, and annual statement exhibits.

d. Provide dependable, accurate, and timely forecasts and budgets for revenue and benefits, as assigned.

e. Provide information and interpretation of various regulatory requirements.

f. Calculate adequate unpaid claims liabilities, as assigned.

g. Other duties as assigned.
